National Public Health Week 2023

Public Health Sciences is hosting events during National Public Health Week (NPHW) from April 3rd-9th, 2023. This year’s theme is, “Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health”.

Following is the schedule for this year’s events at UNC Charlotte:

Throughout NPHW, we welcome donations of non-perishable food items to support the Jamil Niner Student Pantry in its efforts to reduce food insecurity on campus. To view the pantry’s most needed items, click here.

NPHW Daily Theme: Community

Affirming the Community: A Cultural Competency Training on Gender Diversity

Master of Public Health (MPH) students, in collaboration with Time Out Youth, invite faculty and staff to attend an informative training on creating a welcoming environment for gender-diverse students at UNC Charlotte. Faculty & staff can participate in 1 of 3 training sessions:

Aftershock (Documentary) Viewing

“When a Black mother dies, there is a ripple effect. We call it Aftershock.”

Please join the College of Health and Human Services Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Access (IDEA) Committee Annual Film Screening Event to view and discuss Aftershock.” This interactive event is being held in collaboration with the Charlotte Maternal Child Health (MCH) Workgroup and the Graduate Public Health Association (GPHA) to discuss the Black Maternal Health Crisis in the U.S. Students, faculty, professionals, and community members are invited to engage in this event.

“Following the deaths of two young women due to childbirth complications, two bereaved families galvanize activists, birth-workers and physicians to reckon with one of the most pressing American crises today: the U.S. maternal health crisis.”

Rhythm and Flow Yoga

MPH students, in collaboration with UREC, invite undergraduate students to learn how to use yoga as a coping strategy for the emotional stress of college and daily life.

NPHW Daily Theme: Violence Prevention

Academy for Public Health Innovations (APHI) Nexus 2023

Join the Academy for Public Health Innovations (APHI) for this annual event, bringing together UNC Charlotte faculty and students, Mecklenburg County public health professionals, data scientists, health care organizations, community groups, and policymakers to explore innovative new approaches to addressing the Charlotte area’s most pressing community health needs and priorities. This event will take place at the Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City (in Uptown) from 12:30-5:30 PM. Find information on parking here and getting there by Light Rail here. Violence Prevention Workshop

Join GPHA and the Center for Wellness Promotion (CWP) for the Know It, Name It, Stop It workshop in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Thursday, April 6th

NPHW Daily Theme: Mental Health

Free Walk-In HIV & STI Testing

APHI, Peer Leader-Educators Advocating for Sexuality Education (PLEASE), CWP, and Quality Comprehensive will be conducting free HIV & STI testing for students. There will also be 200 at-home COVID-19 tests to be distributed by a health educator during this event.

HIV testing will take place from 11:00 AM-2:00 PM at the Student Union in rooms 340A (registration) and 340D (testing).

Mental Health Panel

GPHA, in collaboration with the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), invites all students, faculty, and staff to join them for an engaging and informative panel discussion on mental health led by MPH students from the Department of Public Health Sciences. The expert panelists will explore the intersection of diversity, harm reduction, and disability in public health. Make sure to register to be a part of the conversation.

Students can sign up for 2-hour volunteer time slots to benefit the Jamil Niner Student Pantry.

This event will take place from 11:00 AM-5:00 PM.
