Tom Elmore Steps in to Help HSMT

Advisory Board member, Tom Elmore, stepped in to help the new Health Systems Management (HSMT) undergraduate major. He received his MBA from East Carolina University, his MS in Industrial Engineering and his BS in Engineering Operations from NC State University. Mr. Elmore served for one year in the CPCC Corporate Learning Center and also provided consulting services for three years. Additionally, he worked with Novant Health as the VP of Growth and Development for over seven years, and prior to that position, was the Regional VP for Premier Inc. In Charlotte.

This semester, Mr. Elmore has been serving as a temporary lecturer for HSMT 3201, a course in healthcare leadership, ethics, and inter-professional communication. He was given a draft syllabus for this course, and then modified it based on what his experience told him was the most pertinent information. Mr. Elmore focused the course on teamwork, and sought to improve the students’ written, oral, and listening skills. To accomplish these goals, he implemented a large team-based assignment and multiple smaller assignments that target oral, written, and listening skills. His favorite assignment is an elevator speech that the students deliver: such assignment can help them prepare for future meetings with healthcare professionals.

Mr. Elmore gives this advice to all his students: “Know your priorities, your principles, and your passion”. He elaborates that, “your priorities are much like your mission; your principles are synonymous with your values; and your passion is your vision”. He explains that these three things are vital to success.
