Sofia Blankenship

Concentration: Epidemiology

Academic Background: Bachelor of Science in Health Systems Management with a minor in Psychology from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Where I’m From: Charlotte, North Carolina

Public Health Interests: Preventative healthcare, policy/decision making, controlling disease outbreaks, health equity.

Public Health Experience: I had the pleasure of working as a Clinical Research Coordinator after I graduated undergrad. I traveled throughout the United States and helped doctors and other healthcare professionals perform clinical trials on ocular pharmaceutical products while also educating our subjects and patients on healthy lifestyles and preventative steps to take for their ocular health. I currently work as an Optician, Research Coordinator, and Tech for Mint Hill Eye where I assist our patients in finding glasses, creating lenses, fitting, and fixing, as well as performing research tasks under Pure Ophthalmic (our research company), and teching tasks for the doctor such as performing schirmers, dilation, auto-refraction, visual acuity, and pupillary reactions/pressure tests.

Why I chose the MPH program at UNC Charlotte: Since I went to UNC Charlotte for my undergrad, I fell in love with the community and programs they had to offer. I knew I would attend UNC Charlotte for my graduate program as it allows me to be back at the school I love while working and attending classes. It gives me the best of both worlds for my social and professional life.

More About Me: I love to read! I know that sounds basic but I really enjoy reading new books. I’m currently reading the Game of Thrones series and it’s amazing! I also love to go out with friends and find areas in Charlotte to eat new food and try new drinks!
